I was lucky enough to take one of my schools, Berkhampstead Prep School to watch the Sabre championships in Gloucester this week.
They got the chance to watch some wonderful fencing as well as speak with Olympians, European, and World champions.
Everyone was very welcoming and took the time to answer their questions and give autographs!
This weekend was spent down in Glastonbury………….not at the music festival though………..we spent the weekend sword in hand and sweat everywhere!
I was doing my first individual epee competition and also taking the opprtunity to cheer on some of my students who were also competing.
They all did wonderfully well with a 3rd for Adam in the under 9’s foil – his first competition!, 2nd place for Lizzie in the Girls Foil U13’s. Ben, David and Matthew also did well with good results in foil across the age groups. It was also Matthew’s first competition. Well done to all.
My results were not nearly as good – having lost all my matches this time, but I came away having scored some points against fencers who have or do represent their country so that was encouraging!
Everyone was really friendly and as my first offical veteran event I had a great welcome. I have to say a big thankyou to Antonia Denham for lending me an epee when mine broke after my first match!
But by far my favourite moment of the day was the huge hug I got from my youngest student who was sooooo excited at winning his first trophy. Makes me proud to be a coach and it makes it all worthwhile.
